San Diego Costal Mental Health

A person in psychotherapy San Diego.

San Diego Coastal Mental Health offers psychotherapy in San Diego as part of our clients’ individualized treatment programs. Individual therapy is one of the most common types of therapy used to treat mental health disorders and co-occurring conditions. Our compassionate psychiatrists provide one-on-one attention to our clients to help them uncover underlying triggers to their condition. They also learn to develop effective coping skills to manage their condition and lead a productive life.

What Is Individual Psychotherapy?

Individual psychotherapy is a form of talk therapy where you work alongside your psychiatrist to address personal concerns and issues that are contributing to your mental health problems. During psychotherapy sessions, you are free to discuss anything you desire, even topics that you feel are too private to share in group therapy.

As you work through your issues and concerns, you should start to feel more confident in your abilities. You should also notice improvements in self-esteem and confidence. These improvements will allow you to feel more confident and open to sharing with loved ones and peers. Most importantly, you learn how to have a healthy relationship with yourself.

Our psychotherapy in San Diego can help with the following:

  • Identify triggers
  • Gain an understanding of your past and yourself
  • Increase self-esteem and confidence
  • Improve impulsiveness and emotional regulation
  • Learn how to process and address personal concerns and issues
  • Improve, build, and maintain healthy relationships
  • Develop coping strategies that work specifically for you
  • Change unhealthy beliefs and thought patterns

While individual psychotherapy is usually one-on-one, friends and loved ones may be included occasionally as part of your personalized treatment plan.

Types of Individual Therapy We Offer

San Diego Coastal Mental Health understands everyone’s mental health problems are unique. As such, we offer different types of individual therapy to best fit their needs and treatment objectives and goals. Some of the different types of individual therapy we offer include:

Motivational Interviewing (MI)

Motivational interviewing (MI) focuses on helping individuals find motivation to make positive changes in their lives. It involves empathetic listening and collaboration with the psychiatrists to help guide individuals toward recognizing the need for change.

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT is one of the most common therapeutic approaches used in psychotherapy. It helps individuals identify and uncover negative thought patterns and behaviors contributing to their mental health issues. CBT helps people better understand the connection between behaviors, thoughts, and feelings while developing tools to change negativity into positive thoughts and behaviors.

Behavioral Therapy

Behavioral therapy incorporates multiple therapeutic techniques, such as modeling, exposure therapy, and reinforcement. It helps individuals realize all their behaviors are learned, so it is possible to unlearn negative behaviors and replace them with positive ones.

Mental Health Counseling

Mental health counseling includes a wide spectrum of therapeutic approaches personalized to support individual needs. Psychiatrists provide guidance, emotional support, and empathy while helping individuals develop effective coping strategies to address their mental health issues and learn how to lead productive lives.

What to Expect During Individual Therapy Sessions

Our psychotherapy in San Diego provides a secure and safe environment where you can share your personal issues and mental health concerns with one of our licensed psychiatrists. Individual therapy is the ideal setting for you to be able to share your innermost thoughts and concerns about anything that you may not be entirely comfortable discussing or sharing in a group setting.

Our psychiatrists utilize evidence-based methods to help you reach your treatment objectives and improve your mental well-being. When you initially start psychotherapy, the focus will be on developing a relationship with your psychiatrist. It is essential to be able to trust your psychiatrist and be willing to open up and share.

During these sessions, your psychiatrists will learn more about you, what your mental health concerns are, your personal and family history, and any previous therapies you have undergone. They also work collaboratively with you to develop treatment goals and objectives and identify topics to discuss during future sessions.

As your rapport grows, you and your therapists will continue to uncover and address any underlying issues. They will guide you in building effective coping strategies and other tools to better manage your mental health. Most importantly, each session is held to the highest confidentiality and privacy under HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act).

How Many Times a Week Do I See My Individual Therapist?

Most of our clients will initially meet with their individual therapist a few times a week through our residential program. Developing trust and rapport during this time is a vital part of treatment. Once a customized treatment plan is developed, people will meet with their therapist at least once a week.

However, in cases where one’s concerns and issues are more severe, they could meet more often. Additionally, should new concerns and issues arise during the course of treatment, it is acceptable to ask for more sessions weekly to ensure the person’s mental health needs are being met.

After residential treatment is over, ongoing therapy sessions often continue as part of one’s aftercare plan. Sessions can be scheduled based on individual needs, such as bi-weekly, weekly, bi-monthly, or monthly.
